We’ve all felt that frustration when the technology we’re using isn’t doing what it’s supposed to! There is not one piece of hardware or software that isn’t affected by some form of technical issue at some point or another. Be it a computer, a phone, a headset, a car, a tv, the internet, video game console, computer software, device operating system, the list just goes on and on.
Websites are not immune to this either. Sometimes things happen and the most important thing to remember is don’t panic. Sometimes it could be something so small it takes seconds to fix. Other times it may take longer but stressing out and panicking will not fix the issue. Keeping a clear head and remaining calm is the best thing you could do. Making sure you always have a backup of your site is extremely important and will help to ease some of the panic knowing you can roll back if you need to.
If you maintain your website yourself it can definitely be intimidating when you encounter a problem. There are many articles on the internet that can help you navigate the small issues that are easy to fix. There are articles about how to do the more advanced fixes as well but if you don’t understand what you’re doing you could do more harm then good to your site. The best thing to do is to reach out to your website designer or contact someone who knows what they are doing if you are concerned about making things worse or you just have no idea what you are doing.
If you have someone who maintains your website for you and issues arise, remember to remain patient as they are doing their best to keep your website up and running. It doesn’t matter who your web designer is, things are still going to happen from time to time because by no means is technology perfect.
Making sure you keep your website up to date and maintained regularly will definitely help keep you from running into the easily avoidable issues.
If you are really concerned about your site being down for any amount of time, be sure to have a staging site setup where updates and changes can be made. You can work out any issues before updating your live site.
Keep in mind that again, even with a staging site and following all the best practices for maintaining your website things can still happen that are out of your (and your web designers) control. Remember to be patient and stay calm. Technology isn’t perfect and things happen but with a little patience and a little maintenance, it will be back to operating the way it should soon enough.
